Carson Wentz, Bringing the Eagles back?

By: Luke Boze

Carson Wentz was selected 2nd overall in the 2016 draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles drafted Wentz with the hope that he could bring them back to the playoffs for the first time in three years. Wentz played his college career at North Dakota State University, where he passed for 5115 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. The Eagles had a bad season before drafting Wentz. They did not have a consistent quarterback after they traded Nick Foles for Sam Bradford. The Eagles made a great choice drafting Wentz, as he could be the answer to their prayers.

The preseason went very well for the Eagles as they won all four of the preseason game, but even after going undefeated through the preseason, they were projected to only win two out of sixteen games. Wentz, on the other hand, had a different prediction. This season the Eagles have won three of the first three games with the help of Wentz. Through the first three games, the Eagles have beaten the Bears, Browns, and Steelers. Through those three wins Wentz has thrown for 769 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions.

Wentz is primed for a great year after coming out of the gate on fire. I can see Wentz and the Eagles going 8-8 and making the playoffs in his rookie season. Wentz is doing exactly what the Eagles wanted him to, and that is play his best and win games. Carson Wentz has a great chance to be named rookie of the year if he continues this type of production.

Carson Wentz is a hot topic to start the season, and I have talked to several students at MCHS about what they think about him. I asked Ty Shaver what he knew about Carson Wentz he said, “He won the starting job with the Eagles after they traded Sam Bradford, he is also the first rookie to lead his team to a 3-0 record and not commit a turnover”, he also believes that “He [Wentz] is a lot like Ben Roethlisberger, mainly because of his size, toughness, arm strength, and mobility”. Ty seems to know quite a bit about Carson Wentz and his comparison of Wentz to Roethlisberger is, in my opinion, eye opening.

When the Eagles drafted Wentz, it was definitely the start of a new era for the franchise. Wentz has had such a great start to the season that there is already talk about the Eagles as Super Bowl champions and Wentz as MVP of the league in his rookie season. The choice is yours to make, will Wentz be able to bring the Eagles back?
