Pulling Weeds, Planting Trees and Building Benches

By Jordin Richardson

On Friday, my criminal justice class went to do volunteer work at the George Washington Carver National Monument.

We did it as a community service project because the park needed some work done. We planted trees, pulled weeds, built benches and just helped them make the place look nice.

While we were there working, people were walking around, and they were happy to see us helping out their community. We split up in three groups, and we had three workers with us — Roger, Gene, and James. They were super happy to see us helping out.

It was raining, but we didn’t mind getting a little wet to help out. It was nice to get out of school for a whole day and help out.  It was also a great opportunity to be apart of a class I love, and If it wasn’t for the school, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to be in the criminal justice program.

We had a lot of fun while doing work. It was good to see the work we accomplished.  When we were done, it was also rewarding to see a smile on everybody’s face. It’s a really good feeling to know that you helped people out when they needed it.
