The McDonald County baseball team is welcoming a new head coach this year, Kevin Burgi. This will be Coach Burgi’s seventh year coaching high school baseball. He was an assistant coach at Joplin and Hollister, and he served as interim head coach at Joplin for a year. He chose to come to McDonald County for the students and the existing staff.
“I’ve always liked this school district, and from a kid stand point, this school seemed tough.” Coach Burgi said. “I also knew people here. I played baseball with Coach Bergen, and Big Coach Hoover, in college at Missouri Southern.”
Coach Burgi’s has simple expectations for his new team this year.
“We’ll focus on the little things, and getting better at fundamentals.”
Before coaching, Coach Burgi started his baseball career as a catcher for Valley View High School, and later received a baseball scholarship. From there, he continued playing baseball in college at Arkansas State University, Missouri Southern, and Garden City Community College. According to Burgi, “Garden City is like the Harvard of community colleges.”
Coach Burgi has a wife, Carrie, who he met in church during his college years.
“I went to church with my grandma, and Carrie was playing the piano. I went up and talked to her because I thought she was cute. About 2 weeks later, she called me and asked me out. She had gotten my number from my grandma.”
The couple now has a two year old daughter named Olivia.
“She loves singing, even though she’s not very good at it, she gets that from her mother.”
The family of three is going to have a fourth member coming in June of 2019. In his free time, Coach Burgi enjoys things like reading a good book, or playing a game of Madden NFL.
