Top 10 Old Country Songs

By Natalie Staib

These are all equally good and the order is for numbering purposes only. I actually only recently started listening to country music, so if you have any suggestions, comment below.

Highway 40 Blues by Ricky Skaggs

This song is all about a man who spent his life on the road chasing freedom, but now he’s tired, lonely and ready to settle down. Written for Ricky by Larry Cordle in 1980.

This song is also all about the freedom of traveling and the open road that’s what I love about it.

Hurricane by Bob Dylan

This song is a work of civil rights activism. Dylan sings of an African American fighter that is falsely tried for murder. Rubin “Hurricane” Carter’s story is told through Bob Dylan.

I love this song! It’s 10 minutes long and full of sweet violin. When I first heard it it gave me goosebumps! Bob Dylan was almost sued for this song and it’s a true story.

Silver Wings by Merle Haggard

This song is about a man watching his woman leave by airplane.

You can hear the sadness and loneliness that this man sings about. His woman is leaving him and he can’t do anything about it. “They’re taking you away and leaving me lonely. Silver wings slowly fading out of sight.” So sad but so pretty.

Swingin’ by John Anderson

Swingin'_-_John_Anderson

This song is about a boy falling in love with Charlotte Johnson on her porch swing.

John Anderson sings this song with a really heavy southern accent and it’s fun to sing along the same way. My favorite line is “Little Charlotte, she’s as pretty as the angels when they sang.”

Any song by Glen Campbell ❤

  • Southern Nights
  • If Not For You
  • Gentle On My Mind
  • Rhinestone Cowboy
  • Wichita Lineman

Glen Campbell is both a lyrical and musical genius. I could listen to any of his songs on repeat, and I have.

Christie McVie and Stevie Nicks’ voices are my favorite to song along to. I recently saw them play in Chicago and had the time of my life.

Four Strong Winds by Bobby Bare

This song is about a man that must travel for work to cold Alberta. He wants his woman to come and offers to pay her fare, only it’s too cold and lonely a place to bring her.

This song is pretty and has been covered by many people. There are several versions to listen to.

Big Iron by Marty Robbins

Texas Red is an outlaw that has killed almost 20 men. A ranger comes to Agua Fria one day to take Texas Red in for a bounty.

I love the way the song is just one big story with a hero cowboy ending.

Crazy by Patsy Cline

This song is about a woman who can’t seem to get over her ex man.

A sad song but a beautiful one. “Oh, crazy. For thinking that my love could hold you. I’m crazy for trying. And crazy for crying. And I’m crazy for loving you”

I’m Sorry by Brenda Lee

This ones about a couple and one of them makes a mistake and is begging for forgiveness.

“I’m sorry, so sorry
Please accept my apology
But love was blind
And I was too blind to see (sorry)”

Country Sunshine by Dottie West Country

This song is about a small town girl who is content living rural.

I wouldn’t mind living somewhere remote all my life in the country sunshine.
