Arts & Culture Teacher Spotlight

Coach Collins, Hero or Teacher?

By Phoebe Rhamy & Autumn Branson

Being juniors in high school, we’ve come in contact with a lot of teachers, but none have ever really stood out to us the way Coach Collins has. Whether it’s on the field or in the classroom, Coach Collins has always made the students of McDonald County High School his top priority. Coach Collins is a man that gives constantly, but never expects anything back.

Coach Collins served as a Marine before realizing he wanted to become a teacher. Coach Collins said “I just want to make an impact on the future and I was trying to figure out what the best way to do that was outside of the military. It’s always been in the back of my mind to teach and coach because I wanted to mold the future leaders.”

When asked about how the transition was from something like that to becoming a teacher. He said that the transition for him was fairly easy, however, he knows that he can’t talk to the students the way he talked to marines so he had to learn how to stop being so intense. Being a teacher has helped Coach Collins adjust back to civilian life and gain back his ability to be more sensitive and know how to nurture.

Coach Collins was then asked if the children here at MCHS inspired him and this was his response.

“Of course, they do. I don’t do this for the paycheck. Seeing that lightbulb click whether it’s on a certain problem or 10 years down the road when they become a CEO of a company. That’s what it’s really all about and that inspiration is always present.”

Coach Collins has made it his top priority to make sure that all of the students he comes in contact with are able to reach their full potential.

“I hate the word potential sometimes because if you don’t work for it that’s all it’ll ever be. I just want to give the tools, knowledge and mindset that they’re all unique and can bring something to the table that nobody else can. I want to teach them that with hard work you will do whatever you want to do in this life and that’s what I hope all my students learn from me.”

Coach Collins is always pushing students outside of their comfort zone and making this school a better place. Since the beginning of high school Coach Collins has always pushed us to be the best versions of ourselves, I think it’s important for everyone to recognize the truly amazing person he is.
