8 People Were Shot During a Fort Pierce, Florida MLK Day Event, Authorities Say: Authorities announced Monday night that eight people had been shot during a crowded Martin Luther King Jr. Day gathering in Fort Pierce, Florida.
All eight adult victims—including one in severe condition—were taken to a hospital, according to Chief Deputy Brian Hester of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office reports that the gunshot was followed by a scuffle in which at least four other people were hurt.
Around 5:20 p.m., gunfire started to ring in Ilous Ellis Park, where more than a thousand people had gathered for a block party, according to Hester. According to the city’s website, the neighborhood had a “family fun day” and a car display in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

People “were simply scattering in all directions when the guns rang out,” Hester recalled. “As our deputies arrived and entered the scene, there was whole commotion. People may be seen sprawled behind anything, including automobiles. At that time, it was difficult to discern who was a victim and merely concealing.
Hester claimed that two sheriff’s deputies who were working in the park were able to aid the injured. He continued by saying that several witnesses also provided aid and transported patients to the hospital.
Police suspect the shooting resulted from “a conflict of some sort between two persons,” according to an initial inquiry, Hester said. Hester stated that he thinks there were probably more shooters, given the information and materials discovered at the scene.
Police have not yet identified the shooting’s suspects. The chief deputy said that investigators are examining the crime site and pursuing some leads from witnesses and locals. Hester added, “It’s deplorable and sad that when someone who stood for peace and equality is being honored, a dispute leads to the use of guns and violence.
