DeWine Prohibits Chinese Apps on State-owned Devices: TikTok and other Chinese-owned apps are not allowed on electronic devices used by employees of the government, according to an executive order issued by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. Just moments after taking the oath of office for a second term, DeWine issued the executive order on Sunday.
According to the order, it is forbidden to use “any social media application, channel, or platform that is owned by an entity located in China, as well as to access the website of any such application, channel, or platform.”
The order specifically mentions the following websites and applications in addition to TikTok:

Tencent Video QQ Worldwide (Qui)
Qzone
WeChat \sWeibo
Miami Music, - Xiao HongShu Zhihu Meituan, and
- Alipay
Taoist Music
Little Red Book of - DingTalkfDing Ding
- Douban

According to the ruling, the apps were using “surreptitious data privacy and cybersecurity practices,” which included gathering users’ personal information, behavioral use data, biometric data, and other data from their devices. Additionally, the directive claims that the Chinese Communist Party employs the apps as an “intelligence collection device.”

When it comes to news issues, the site has come under fire for not policing misinformation, with TikTok automatically suggesting roughly one in five videos that include inaccuracy. A similar prohibition to Ohio’s has been promoted by the Biden administration and Congress.

The Chinese app ban was the only executive order that did not include any of these things. The formal swearing-in ceremony for DeWine’s second term is set for Monday at noon.
