God of War Ragnarok is now the official name of the game. For a long time, fans assumed that Ragnarok would be the last part of the title, and rumors tried hard to convince them otherwise. Developer Sony’s Santa Monica Studio has already said that the upcoming game will finish the Norse storyline from 2018’s God of War, so you know the stakes will be high.
Fans also seem very interested in the game: God Of War Ragnarok’s trailer has the most views right now out of all the trailers shown at the last Sony PlayStation Showcase on September 9, 2021. Most of these trailers have more than a million views. That’s a big deal. Currently, over 12 million people have watched God of War: Ragnarok. Who said that fans were less interested in Sony-only games?
The game will pick up right where the last one left off, with Kratos and Atreus going back into the ancient Norse world to try to stop Ragnarok, the world’s end. Read on to learn everything you need about the game, like when God of War Ragnarok will come out.
When will God of War Ragnarok Release Date?
The release date for God of War Ragnarok is November 9, 2022. Sony’s Santa Monica Studio announced the release date with a new CGI trailer that shows Kratos and Atreus fighting many enemies before facing Fenrir, a giant wolf. In a blog post from July 6, Santa Monica Studio said that the game could be pre-ordered starting July 15. The blog also talks about the different versions of the game, such as the collector’s edition that comes with a 16-inch replica of Thor’s hammer.
Fans have been waiting for months for news about when the game will come out, so this is good news. At the Sony PlayStation Showcase on September 9, Sony Santa Monica and PlayStation Studios said God of War Ragnarok would not be coming out until 2022. During a Q&A, Herman Hulst, who is the head of worldwide studios for Sony Interactive Entertainment, talked about the pushback:
“Right now, we’re working on Horizon: Forbidden West and the next God of War,” Hulst said. Both of these games have a lot of stories. “Access to performance capture and talent affects both of these. We think that Horizon will come out this holiday season. But we can’t say for sure yet, and we’re doing everything we can to let you know as soon as possible. “God of War was a little bit of a late starter. So, we’ve decided to put that game off until next year so that Santa Monica Studio can make the great God of War game we all want to play.

What’s going on?
Christopher Judge, who gives Kratos’s voice, said God Of War: Ragnarok was delayed in 2019 because he was sick. The judge said on Twitter, “Ragnarok was delayed because of me.” He went on to explain that in 2019, he had severe health problems that left him unable to walk.
Because of his illness, he had surgery on his back, hips, knees, and rehab while Sony Santa Monica waited for him to get better. Judge also said that Sony Santa Monica gave him “nothing but love and support” and “never said a word about the delay or what caused it.”
What can we look forward to in God of War Ragnarok?
In a PlayStation Blog post, Grace Orlady, the senior manager of Santa Monica Studio, has already given us hints about what we can expect from the game when it comes out. “As the trailer shows, we pick up a few years after what happened in God of War” (2018). The freezing winds of Fimbulwinter have reached Midgard, making it harder than ever for Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir to live in the Norse wilds.
She also said, “The last game built a lot of trust and understanding between father and son, but their relationship is still very complicated, especially after Atreus’ Giant heritage and the hidden prophecy only Kratos saw were revealed.”
The trailer for God of War: Ragnarok also showed two of the main bad guys in the game. The first one was Freya, who helped Kratos in the last round. “We wanted to remind players that Freya is not only a terrifyingly powerful user of Vanir magic but also a strong warrior in her own right. Freya will use every weapon against Kratos, who killed her son, because she helped him avoid justice.
Lastly, Thor was shown to be a threat. “Mimir called him the “Biggest Butchering Bastard in the Nine Realms,” but Thor became one of the most powerful Aesir gods by killing almost all of the Giants at Odin’s order.” This time, the story will take place in all nine realms, so we will also get to see Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, and Asgard. The last game didn’t have these three.
When Kratos returns, he will also have a few new tools at his disposal, including various shields that can change how the god-slayer uses his skills. In God of War, our hero could use the Guardian Shield. In an interview with YouTuber Jon Ford, Ragnarok director Eric Williams said that the sequel will have “different shields, and they have different defensive options and abilities.”
“We’re doing this because we want to give you more creative freedom in how you build your Kratos, in terms of equipment, loadout, and other things,” Williams said. “Right down to the defense, so you can play a little differently, and enemies know how to respond, putting you in different situations where you need to use different things.”
In a recent GI cover story, where developers showed footage and gave information to the magazine, new information about combat was revealed. For one, the triangle button is no longer only used to call back the Leviathan Axe. It is now also used to trigger powerful abilities. Players can now press Triangle while holding the axe to use Frost Awaken and Whiplash. This gives ice to the axe and fire to the Blades of Chaos. After that, more damage can be done.
Will PS4 get God of War: Ragnarok?
God of War Ragnarok will come out on both PS4 and PS5. Herman Hulst specifically mentioned the game in an interview where he said that several games that were thought to be PlayStation 5 exclusives would also be coming to PS4. “Where it makes sense to make a game for both PS4 and PS5, like Horizon: Forbidden West, the next God of War, and GT7, we’ll keep looking into that,” Hulst said.
“And owners of a PS4 can play that game if they want to. It will be available to them if they want to play the PS5 version. There’s a good chance that both games will come out at the same time. Sony hasn’t released a first-party PS4/PS5 game that didn’t come out simultaneously on both platforms yet.
Will PCs be able to use it?
We don’t know yet about God of War Ragnarok whether it will be available on PC or not. In the past few years, Sony has been putting its first-party games on PC soon after they come out on consoles. God of War was released on PC a few years after it came out on consoles, so that the same thing may happen here.
