A 38-vehicle incident on eastbound Interstate 90 16 miles east of Ellensburg kept it blocked for most of Wednesday, according to troopers and fire officials. The crash was probably brought on by freezing fog and poor visibility. According to investigators, a car lost traction and came to stop in the middle of the road, obstructing all the lanes, which caused the pileup.
Around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, crews from the Washington State Department of Transportation and Washington State Patrol started working to seal the section of the highway. East of Kittitas, at milepost 115, the interstate was shut down.

Eastbound I-90 at milepost 115 is expected to reopen at 4 p.m., according to a tweet from WSDOT just after 2 p.m. Crews are working quickly to clean the crashes. Just before 3:30 p.m., WSDOT stated that the highway had reopened. According to Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Rich Elliott, five persons were treated for relatively minor injuries before being transported to hospitals in Quincy and Ellensburg.

Elliott calculated that 45 to 50 automobiles were located within a three-quarter mile radius of the crash scene, many of which had some sort of damage but most of which were not directly involved.
The WSP tweeted at roughly 7 a.m., “You may want to delay your travel for quite a bit or explore alternate routes in the meanwhile if you’re planning a trip from the Puget Sound area via Snoqualmie Pass toward Spokane.”
Drivers will need to take a detour via local roads, US 2 through Stevens Pass, or US 12 over White Pass, according to WSP. On Sunday, I-90 eastbound near Easton was closed due to a collision involving 15 automobiles.
