Since his nearly catastrophic snow plow accident, Jeremy Renner walked the red carpet for the first time on Tuesday night (11 April). The “Avengers” actor attended the debut of his new Disney+ reality series “Reservations,” which focuses on restoring abandoned cars for impoverished communities worldwide.
The Westwood Regency Village Theatre in Los Angeles served as the venue for the event. Around six o’clock, Renner arrived on the carpet with a cane and appeared with his family for pictures. The actor initially used a motorized scooter to help him through press interviews after a brief period of walking.
Even though he was recuperating from his wounds, Renner declared he was committed to keeping the “Rennervations” debut on schedule:
“I was really adamant about them not pushing this thing while there was momentum with the brass at Disney, with us, with the timing of it in all of our lives. It just felt right,” Renner told Variety. “I look a little beat up right now, but I promise you this show is what’s propelling me to get better and makes me want to get better every day. I set out a goal to be walking this carpet. And here I am enjoying it. Otherwise it would have gone to an abyss with no date and lost traction and excitement and I would have been very, very, very frustrated. I’m very excited right now because we’re here.”
On January 1st, Renner attempted to climb back into his 14,330-pound Sno-Cat to stop it from striking his nephew, but he was run over, suffering life-threatening ἰnjuries. The executive producer of “Rennervations,” Romilda de Luca, revealed that she went to the hospital to visit Renner following the incident. De Luca told Variety at the premiere:
“When I saw him, it was the hardest thing. I knew right there he was going to be okay.”
In support of Renner, Disney CEO Bob Iger also appeared at the premiere. They briefly conversed before posing for pictures on the blue carpet. After the premiere, Jimmy Kimmel moderated a Q&A with Renner and other cast members. He rode his scooter up to his chair to a standing ovation from the spectators inside the theater.
According to Yahoo, The actor shared about the Snowcat that ἰnjured him, noting that it’s very necessary to get around on the property:
“My mom wants to light it on fire and have a big old party. The thing’s amazing, I love the thing… I just have to learn to drive it better.”
He broke down in tears at one point and expressed how much his friends and family have helped him get better, as well as how crucial the show has been to his health:
“It takes a lot of people. It starts with my family and my daughter. Then a big part of my recovery was this show,” said Renner. “It set a big milestone for me to get better, to make sure all of this hard work was not all for nothing. I mean, running my damn self over, right? I had a lot of love, man.”
According to ANI News, Renner spoke with Diane Sawyer for ABC News in his first interview since the accident earlier this month.
“I just happened to be the dummy standing on the dang track a little bit, seeing if my nephew was there,” he said. “You shouldn’t be outside the vehicle when you’re operating it. It’s like driving a car with one foot out of the car… But it is what it was. And it’s my mistake, and I paid for it.”
While waiting for paramedics to arrive after trekking through the snow for 21 minutes, Renner’s neighbors dialed 911 and attempted to keep the actor alive. Renner told Sawyer on her ABC News special that after the accident and his recovery, he would like to be able to walk for his first red carpet-appearance.
