Lake County launches ‘Student Treasurer of the Day’

Lake County launches ‘Student Treasurer of the Day’: The office of Lake County Treasurer Mike Zuren has begun a quarterly initiative called “Student Treasurer of the Day.” The industry involves a full day of events starting with a swearing-in “ceremony” followed by an introduction with Zuren’s employees. High school students are recommended for the program by their principals.

Additionally, the student treasurer takes the time to become familiar with every aspect of the treasurer’s office, including the budgeting, investment, delinquent, and cashier functions. The student then goes to the bank with Zuren to deposit money daily while learning about various state and municipal tax reduction programs for senior citizens, veterans, and people in need of help.

The young treasurer also receives instruction on tax sales and the role of the Lake County Land Bank. The program is completed with a tour of the Lake County Administration Center, where the student meets department heads and elected officials and learns about their roles in local government.

According to Zuren, public meetings with residents, organizations, and business owners in the area are also planned. She also noted that students are “qualified” for six hours of service learning. Parker Pikor, a junior at Lake Catholic High School, just won the title of Student Treasurer of the Day.

He remarked, “I am grateful for the chance to learn about the function of the treasurer’s office and local government. Honor student Pikor is a wrestler, a member of the 4H Club, and a musician who plays the piano and banjo, among other instruments.

Parker has a lot of passion, and maybe this initiative will inspire other local kids to get more involved in their communities, too, according to Zuren. “I am pleased to hear that Parker represented Lake Catholic in such a terrific way,” said principal Thomas McKrill.

Nothing less from him was to be expected, and we value this chance for our pupils. The following Student Treasurer of the Day, which will only be available to seniors from now on, is slated for March 2.
