On Thursday morning, a stabbing along the Las Vegas Strip resulted in two fatalities and six injuries. A suspect has reportedly been arrested, according to police.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released a statement stating that one of the victims was declared dead at the scene and another at the University Medical Center. In a news conference on Thursday, LVMPD Captain Dori Koren said that three of the victims were in severe condition.

The deceased were identified as Las Vegas residents Maris Mareen Digiovanni, 30, and Brent Allan Hallett, 47, according to the Clark County coroner’s office.

According to Koren, the other victims “looked to be stable.” At a second press conference later in the day, LVMPD Sheriff Joseph Lombardo stated that the victims seemed to be a mix of locals and visitors. According to Koren, police removed a “large kitchen knife” from the scene.

According to authorities, the stabbings started at about 11:40 a.m. local time. According to LVMPD Deputy Chief James LaRochelle, the first incident looked to be unprovoked. After stabbing the first victim, the perpetrator continued south along Las Vegas Boulevard and stabbed numerous more people, according to LaRochelle.

Several “concerned bystanders” pursued the suspect as he rounded a corner and headed east, according to LaRochelle. A combination of hotel security and LVMPD officers then arrested the suspect.

According to court records, Yoni Barrios, 32, was arrested and placed in the Clark County Detention Center on two counts of open murder and six counts of attempted murder. His first court date was set for Friday in the afternoon.

The suspect didn’t seem to be a local, according to LaRochelle. The situation had reportedly been secured by 1:50 p.m. local time, according to police. In order for police to continue gathering evidence, a section of Las Vegas Boulevard remained closed, according to Koren.
