Gorbachev met Raisa Titarenko when they were both students at Moscow State University. Even though she was engaged to someone else, the engagement was broken off and she started dating Gorbachev. In 1953, they got married. Titarenko later found out she was pregnant, but when she got sick she had to have an abortion to save her life.
Later, they had a daughter who they named Irina. Titarenko died in 1999 from leukaemia.Gorbachev is known for having a port-wine stain on his forehead. He doesn’t drink much, never smokes, and isn’t interested in women, which makes him very different from other former Soviet officials.
