When Montell left college, he got a job at Williams Television Time, where he helped make different infomercials. But at this point, he was still set on being a musician in the future. He asked his coworkers to come to see him perform, and Janet Jackson and Shanice Wilson just happened to be there. Then, in 1995, he gave out his mixtape, met Russell Simmons, and signed a deal with Def Jam. He was the label’s second R&B artist to sign.

In 1995, Jordan released the song “This Is How We Do It.” It went straight to the top of the charts and stayed there for seven weeks. Because of how well this single did, Montell’s first album sold more than a million copies and became platinum. After this, Montell went on tour with other artists like Boys II Men. Jordan didn’t stop with just one hit. He went on to make songs like “Somethin’ 4 da Honeyz,” “Let’s Ride,” and “I Like.” But none of these songs did as well as “This Is How We Do It.” But “Get It On Tonite” came close, and this song reached its highest position on the charts at number four in 1999. During this time, he also wrote and produced songs for Christina Milian, 98 Degrees, Shae Jones, and a lot of other artists. By 2003, Jordan had left Def Soul. Later, he said that he and the label executives had substantial “artistic differences,”, especially about his image. He only put out one more song before he stopped making music: “Let It Rain,” which came out in 2008. Fontana Records put out this song.

After leaving the music business, Montell decided to focus on his work as a minister. He did what his parents did and tried something new by joining a church group called Victory World Music. This caused him a lot of trouble with his music career. At one point, Montell says that in 2010, while fasting at the Victory World Church, God sent him a message.
