In the Intracoastal Waterway close to Port O’Connor, search operations for a missing boater involved in a barge collision continued on Saturday. The U.S. Coast Guard reports that the missing boater, a 20-year-old guy, has been missing since late Friday night when the boat he was riding in with another man struck a barge. The other boater was located, injured, and transferred to a hospital.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, U.S. Coast Guard, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and volunteer citizens looked for the missing guy through Friday night and into Saturday. The search was halted at 5 a.m. on Saturday and continued into the evening, according to Chief Deputy Johnny Krause of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities have not disclosed the names of the boaters. Volunteer requests on social media Anyone available and able to assist with the search with a boat was urged to report to the Sanctuary at Costa Grande, a seaside neighborhood several miles west of Port O’Connor, on Friday night.
The Coast Guard stated in a news release on Saturday afternoon that a boat towing the barge had alerted them to the collision at 10:56 p.m. At about 11:20 p.m., according to Krause of the sheriff’s office, they received a call. According to the Coast Guard, the missing boater was not wearing a life jacket.

A response boat from the Port O’Connor station of the Coast Guard and a helicopter from Corpus Christi were sent to search. Along with Parks and Wildlife and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, boat towing companies TowBoat U.S. and SeaTow helped in the search. Additionally helping were volunteer fire departments and private vessels.
