Orange County Woman Accused of Shooting, Killing Mother, Kicking Deputy: About her 75-year-old mother’s shooting in eastern Orange County, a lady was charged on Sunday. Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home on Spruce Pine Trail about midnight after hearing reports of a fight and a shooting. Cheryl Medlin, 75, was shot in the forehead and transferred to Duke Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday afternoon.

Paula Lee Decoteau, 51, the daughter of Medlin, was accused of second-degree kidnapping and assault with a dangerous weapon with the intent to kill and cause great bodily harm. She was also charged with kicking a deputy in the chest while being arrested, which led to her being accused of assault on a public official.

A single gunshot was heard after an argument between Decoteau and the victim, according to other house residents. They claimed that Decoteau confiscated their phones after the incident and kept them there “until she determined what to do next.”
