Returning to social media, Richard Simmons expresses his gratitude. On Wednesday, only days after the debut of the TMZ documentary about the fitness icon’s public disappearance, the 74-year-old thanked his admirers for the affection. “Everyone, I appreciate your generosity and love. Regards, Richard “Simmons posted on Facebook.

The legitimacy of the message was confirmed to PEOPLE by Michael Catalano, Simmons’ manager. “Richard posted a personal message. The response to the special and all the well wishes he received moved him. The generosity gave him hope.” The Facebook post’s comments section was inundated with Simmons supporters.

“Richard, we miss you but hope you’re doing what’s best for you. You’ve brought me a lot of joy over the years, and now it’s your turn to enjoy serenity and happiness “a follower commented. A different Facebook user wrote, “You deserve so much credit for making time for yourself. It’s finally your turn after giving so much of yourself to the world. Bravo for you.”

After spending years in the spotlight, Simmons abruptly ceased teaching at his well-known fitness center on February 15, 2014 and has not been spotted since. The popular podcast Missing Richard Simmons, which gave birth to outlandish accusations that Simmons is being held hostage in his Hollywood Hills home by his maid, maybe changing into a woman, and other speculations, has exacerbated the mystery surrounding his public disappearance.

By speaking to a few people who knew Simmons, TMZ examined the details surrounding his disappearance from the public eye in the recent documentary that aired on FOX. Interviews with Suzanne Somers, Bruce Vilanch, and Leslie Wilshire, Simmons’ longtime costume designer, were included in the special. A free Tubi stream will begin on August 30 when TMZ Investigates: What Really Happened to Richard Simmons is available right now on Hulu.
