In 2019, a House Ways and Means Committee led by Massachusetts Rep. Richard Neal, a Democrat, first asked for six years’ worth of Trump’s tax returns. Since Trump was still in office, his administration quickly thwarted this endeavour.
The Treasury Department of the Trump administration declined to provide the documents, but after Joe Biden was elected President, the new Justice Department overturned the previous administration’s decision. Trump’s tax records should be made available for Congress to scrutinise, according to Biden’s DOJ in 2021. The legal battle was started when Trump and his legal team filed a lawsuit to stop the Treasury Department from disclosing the information and requested the Supreme Court’s intervention.
The House committee had won in lower courts. Still, Chief Justice John Roberts issued a stay in October, preventing the Treasury Department from providing the information until the Supreme Court could decide if the case was lawful.
