The U.S. Supreme Court has mandated that House Democrats receive Donald Trump’s tax returns, ending the former President’s protracted legal battle. Trump is dissatisfied with the decision. Democrats in the House have been looking for Trump’s tax returns for years to look into any possible tax evasion or other misconduct by him or the Trump firm.

In 2019, a House Ways and Means Committee led by Massachusetts Rep. Richard Neal, a Democrat, first asked for six years’ worth of Trump’s tax returns. Since Trump was still in office, his administration quickly thwarted this endeavour.
The Treasury Department of the Trump administration declined to provide the documents, but after Joe Biden was elected President, the new Justice Department overturned the previous administration’s decision. After Elon Musk reinstated his Twitter account and lifted the lifetime ban, Donald Trump responded.
Trump’s tax records should be made available for Congress to scrutinise, according to Biden’s DOJ in 2021. The legal battle was started when Trump and his legal team filed a lawsuit to stop the Treasury Department from disclosing the information and requested the Supreme Court’s intervention.
The House committee had won in lower courts. Still, Chief Justice John Roberts issued a stay in October, preventing the Treasury Department from providing the information until the Supreme Court could decide if the case was lawful.

Roberts rejected Trump’s request on Tuesday and undid his earlier obstruction. According to a Supreme Court decision, “the appeal for a stay of the mandate presented to The Chief Justice and by him forwarded to the Court is denied.” The previous order made by the Chief Justice is revoked.
Republicans gained a majority of seats in the House of Representatives, giving them the authority to select majorities in each committee, which triggered the record release process. It is unclear whether Republicans want to continue looking into the tax records until they take back the House in January 2023. When they took over the majority in the Senate, some Republicans demanded a probe into Biden and his son’s financial dealings.
