Tammi Terrell Cause of Death

Beginning in April 1967 and lasting just 12 months, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s collaboration on some of the best love songs ever produced at Motown Records resulted in four consecutive singles. Regretfully, Tammi Terrell was only well enough to record the first two of those four singles at the time of their release.

Tammi Terrell Cause of Death

At a live concert at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia in October 1967, barely six months after the now-iconic song “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” Terrell passed out on stage. Tammi Terrell passed away on March 16, 1970, two and a half years after her 1967 fall due to complications from a malignant brain tumour.

While Terrell and Marvin Gaye were still releasing new music, the Motown Records publicity machine initially played down Terrell’s illness. Marvin Gaye’s vocals were overdubs of Terrell’s pre-illness recordings for many of the singles that were issued under both names.

During this time, Gaye achieved one of his greatest solo singles ever with “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” but he didn’t play live again for the next three years after Terrell’s passing in 1970.

She Was Diagnosed With Cancer at a Young Age

Tammi Terrell experienced migraines and headaches since she was a little child, even after she rose to fame. She fell into Marvin Gaye’s arms on stage during their performance of “Your Precious Love” at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia on October 14, 1967.

Her right side of the brain had a cancerous tumour, which the doctors quickly identified. Early in 1968, she underwent brain surgery. Following her initial operation, she resumed recording and live performances. Her tumour got worse despite her optimism, necessitating additional procedures.

Doctors ordered Terrell to stop performing live by 1969, and he was too sick to do any more music recordings. For her third album with Gaye, Easy, Valerie Simpson allegedly had to fill in for Terrell. Gaye later said this was “another moneymaking scheme on BG’s [Berry Gordy’s] part”.

To record over Simpson’s guide vocals, Simpson asserted that the sick Terrell was brought into the studio at the appropriate time. When Marvin Gaye was performing at the Apollo Theater in 1969, Terrell made her last public appearance.

As soon as Terrell saw Gaye, he hurried up to her side. The two of them started singing “You’re All I Need to Get By,” and they received a standing ovation. See the tweet for more details:
