With a goal of getting more youngsters reading, the Harrison County Board of Commissioners has once again contributed $30,000. County Commissioners Paul Coffland, Amy Norris, and Dustin Corder signed a resolution on Wednesday to provide monies to the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio for the Imagination Library project.

Coffland reported after the meeting that the state commission had initially contributed $10,000 to assist the program in 2019 when it was first introduced in the state. Approximately 56% of the county’s eligible youngsters (over 520) are enrolled in the program. Children under the age of five can take advantage of the program’s no-cost book distribution.

Every month, kids get a package in the mail containing a new book. We owe a great deal to Sandy Thompson, our library director, and the rest of the team who work so hard to bring in so many people. It would be great, he continued, if the library could endow itself so that its patrons never had to pay to check out a book.

If we could help them raise the remaining funds necessary, they could accomplish that. Coffland said his grandchildren “enjoy it” in the program. He said his grandchildren love getting personalized books in the mail. To register your child for the program, please visit ohioimaginationlibrary.org.

The bids were put on hold by a unanimous vote of the commissioners. The commissioners also agreed with the engineer’s suggestion to pay PDK Construction of Pomeroy, Ohio, $125,384 to replace some guardrails.

At the meeting on February 1, when four bids were opened, this was the lowest bid submitted by a contractor. On Harrison County Roads 12 and 25, the work includes replacing and installing around 5,000 feet of guardrail.
