Edwin Garcia, Arthuro Garcia, Miguel Portillo, and Kevin Turcios were the four victims, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Due to the collision, I-85 southbound was shut down for many hours close to Exit 45, WT Harris Boulevard. Tuesday night, at about 10:30 p.m., the road reopened.

Witnesses claimed to have seen flames emerging from the collision between the dump truck and at least one other vehicle. Dianella Montes, a student at UNC Charlotte, told WCNC Charlotte that the incident “looked like a car in the—looked like smashed into the back of the truck.”

The State Highway Patrol is looking into what transpired after seeing officers with flashlights peering under the dump truck. On WT Harris Boulevard and nearby streets, the fatal accident produced significant congestion.

Police officers were observed directing cars away from the location and blocking highway exits. According to Montes, the tragedy serves as a somber warning to drive carefully, especially during busy periods on the roadway. “Their life is gone just like that. It could have been a family, friends like it’s just,” Montes added. “It’s awful,”
