What Happened the Last Time Brock Purdy and Jalen Hurts Faced Off?: For the chance to compete in Super Bowl LVII, the Philadelphia Eagles will host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The quarterback matchup between Brock Purdy of the 49ers and Jalen Hurts, a potential MVP candidate for Philadelphia, is intriguing.
The conference championship game on Sunday won’t be Hurts and Purdy’s first meeting, though. During their collegiate years in 2019, Hurts and the Oklahoma Sooners defeated Purdy and the Iowa State Cyclones in a matchup.
Even though Hurts and Purdy both had outstanding games, Oklahoma won 42-41. Hurts completed 18 of his 26 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns, adding 68 rushing yards and two more scores. Purdy finished the day with a losing performance, going 19 of 30 for 282 yards, five passing touchdowns, and one rushing touchdown.

More than three years later, Hurts and Purdy will captain opposing NFL teams in the NFC conference final. However, they each arrived at the Super Bowl within one game in a different way.

Purdy didn’t perform exceptionally well in the divisional round matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, but he still contributed enough to the 49ers’ 19-12 triumph. The 49ers relied more on their defense and the rushing tandem of Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell than on Purdy, who finished 19 of 29 for 214 yards and no interceptions.
Hurts did not have a strong performance against the New York Giants, similar to Purdy. But on Saturday night, the Eagles quarterback only participated in the first half of the game. Hurts scored three of the Eagles’ four first-half touchdowns while completing 12 17 passes for 118 yards. Philly had a 28-0 advantage at halftime, winning 37-7 in the end.

It’s improbable that Hurts and Purdy would score 11 touchdowns together in the conference championship game on Sunday, but stranger things have happened. Like a quarterback facing the 839th pick in the draught with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line after starting two seasons for his collegiate team.
