A reparations task team in Georgia received $250,000 in funding from a county government. According to a Fulton County news release, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved the budget on January 18 by a vote of 4 to 3.
Atlanta is located in Fulton County. According to the news release, the reparations task force would advise the board of commissioners on
“priorities, objectives, and policies which will assist the revival, preservation, and stabilization of the Black/African American population in Fulton County in the form of reparations.”
The task committee was initially established in 2021 to examine the viability of reparations to Black county residents, according to FOX 5.
To determine whether the county owes Black residents reparations for slavery, Jim Crow, and the effects of “urban renewal,” funds were requested.

The investigation will also evaluate how much Black residents should get if reparations are required. According to Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, chair of the Task Force Advisory Board, the money represents a win.

According to Sims-Alvarado,
“It was a great victory to secure a majority vote from the Board of Commissioners granting $250,000 to perform an empirical-based study and a feasibility study.”
“Qualitative and quantitative data will allow the Task Force to critically examine how slavery, Jim Crow, and Urban Renewal denied African Americans opportunities to acquire personal, political, and economic autonomy…
Recommendations will be offered based on the empirical evidence. The feasibility study will demonstrate how Fulton County can support the recommendations made by the Task Force.”
In October 2024, the task force will report its conclusions to the board of commissioners.
