SOUTHWESTERN BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The county of Brunswick has signed a new contract with The Healing Place to provide services to its citizens battling substance misuse.
“I think it’s awesome. We’re always searching for more resources,” said Karli Wagner, who graduated from a similar recovery program just two years ago. “We kind of like that there are places everywhere expanding, you know, that people can find recovery.”
On Monday, all four active Brunswick County commissioners voted to authorize funding for 20 beds at the New Hanover County peer-led facility. There will be 20 spots available. 10 for men and 10 for women. Illness prevented Commissioner Frank Williams from attending the vote.
According to Randy Thompson, chairman of the Board of Commissioners,
“Having the availability and being assured of the availability of the beds for treatment is extremely important. “You know, in the past, we’ve had to search for other locations.”
This one-year contract worth up to $198,000 will run through the close of the fiscal year. At that time, a new agreement to fund the same number of beds for the entire year could cost up to $481,000 and require a vote from the governing body.
This contract states that the county will pay $66 per resident daily. Getting patients to and from the clinic is included in that price. Wagner, who has been through recovery, is relieved to learn that recovering individuals now have more peer-led resources.
After “hitting rock bottom,” she sought help from Christian Recovery Centers Inc.’s peer-led program. It was the peer-led approach that helped her out.
Wagner said,
“You know, being able to say ‘I went through the exact same thing you did, maybe not in the capacity of what you’ve been through, but the program itself,’ kind of really coached you along and made you feel like ‘this is possible, I can do this.’” said Wagner.
The Healing Place, like CRCI, is not a traditional medical facility but a peer-led recovery center. According to Wagner, collaborating with The Healing Place can only help the county’s fight against the opioid epidemic.

Again, up to $481,000 in money might be included in the authorized contract for the upcoming fiscal year. On Monday, Commissioner Pat Sykes verified with a county staff member that the estimated price would only be reached if all 20 beds were in use every day of the year.
Sykes also requested a tour for commissioners, and The Healing Place personnel indicated they would be happy to arrange a time and day for this.
