“Gregory died of natural causes in Sedona, Arizona, in 2002, aged 90. He and his wife were married from 1944 until his death. Gregory is interred at the Sedona Community Cemetery in Arizona.”
James Gregory Career And Legacy
In 1939, he made his Broadway debut in a Key Largo production. He served in the US Navy and US Marine Corps during World War II, from 1941 to 1946. The 1982 film The Atomic Cafe features a sequence from one of his early acting jobs in army training films.
He also worked as a radio operator for a year in the 21st Precinct (1955–1956). Gregory had the lead role in 45 episodes of the 1920s-set NBC crime thriller The Lawless Years.
He played NYPD Detective Barney Ruditsky in the 1959–1961 television series. Following his portrayal of McCarthyite Senator Iselin in the 1962 film The Manchurian Candidate, Gregory featured in the 1963 film PT 109 alongside Cliff Robertson.

In the Matt Helm film series, he played MacDonald, Dean Martin’s espionage boss; in the 1966 Star Trek episode “Dagger of the Mind,” he played Dr. Tristan Adams; and in the 1967 film Clambake, he played Elvis Presley.
In the 1968 series pilot, Gregory created television history by being the first actor to portray Jonathan Kaye, a regular character on Hawaii Five-O. Gregory played Nick Hannigan in the film Detective School.
He had a semi-regular role as Deputy Inspector Frank Luger in the television sitcom Barney Miller. In a 1986 episode of Mr. Belvedere, he played his final acting appearance.
