Betnijah Laney-Hamilton has been playing for the New York Liberty in the W.N.B.A. for four seasons now. This is the longest she has stayed with one team during her nine-year career. She played college basketball at Rutgers University in New Jersey. In 2015, she was chosen by the Chicago Sky in the second round of the W.N.B.A. draft.
Since then, she has played for several teams including Chicago, Connecticut, Indiana, and Atlanta, before joining the Liberty in 2021. Laney-Hamilton quickly became an important player as the Liberty worked to improve their team. She made it to the All-Star team in her first season with New York. Last year, the Liberty made it to the W.N.B.A. finals for the first time since 2002.

Her husband is Jordan Hamilton. Ms. Laney-Hamilton’s success with the Liberty has allowed her to settle in Brooklyn. But she hasn’t fully embraced being a New Yorker: “I don’t think I’ve taken the subway since I’ve been in New York,” she said.

Although she grew up in Delaware, Ms. Laney-Hamilton spent summers and holidays visiting her aunt in Brooklyn, who lived close to what is now Barclays Center, where the Liberty play. This childhood experience has been helpful. These days, her 2-year-old niece often visits from Delaware to stay with her and explore the area’s playgrounds.
In the off-season, Ms. Laney-Hamilton lives in Japan, where her husband, Jordan Hamilton, plays professional basketball in the Japanese B.League. They share a two-bedroom apartment in Downtown Brooklyn.
“For me, Sundays are kind of like every day because I don’t really get a weekend,” she said. “Sometimes, I don’t even know it’s Sunday.”
