The It prequel show has been spoken about for a while, but it is still alive and well, unlike Pennywise. In addition, HBO Max has officially ordered a complete season of it. Based on Stephen King’s It horror classic, the prequel will be titled Welcome to Derry and go further than director Andy Muschietti’s most previous film adaptations.
In collaboration with Wonder Woman screenwriter and It: Chapter Two co-producer Jason Fuchs, Muschietti and his sister Barbara, who produced It in 2017 and It: Chapter Two in 2019, created Welcome to Derry.
The premiere will be one of several episodes that Muschietti, who also directed the upcoming The Flash movie and the horror flick Mama, plans to direct. The Muschietti siblings said in a statement (According to Warner Bros)
“As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces. It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humor, humanity, and horror.”
Pennywise, a shape-shifting monster clown, pursued and murdeɼed neighborhood kids for hundreds of years in Derry, Maine. Chapter Two provided a more detailed depiction of Pennywise’s early years on Earth.
The Losers’ Club, the gang of children frightened by Pennywise after it awakens from hibernation to hunt victims in Derry, was portrayed in the first movie by Jaeden Martell, Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Chosen Jacobs.
The elder versions of the children from the first film, played by Bill Hader, James Ransone, Jessica Chastain, James Ransone, Jay Ryan, Stanley Uris, and Isaiah Mustafa, returned to Derry as adults to confront Pennywise, played by Bill Skarsgard, one last time in the sequel. Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max, said in a statement that Welcome to Derry will (as reported by Collider)
“expand the It storytelling canvas and bring fans deeper into the terrifying, mesmerizing town of Derry.”
“To be able to return to the world of my all-time favorite horror novel and help build upon the singularly brilliant cinematic universe created by Andy and Barbara is more than the opportunity of a lifetime, it’s a dream come true — or, maybe more appropriately, a nightmare,” Fuchs said, According to Variety.
HBO Max executives have long been considering producing a prequel series based on the works of Stephen King. Plans were set in motion for an Overlook Hotel series in 2020 that would be based on the settings of The Shining and Doctor Sleep. Finally, that program was canceled. King himself remarked on Welcome to Derry (as reported by Deadline)
“I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara. Red balloons all around!”

Welcome to Derry Release Date
We don’t know when Welcome to Derry will be released as of April 2023. The show’s production is expected to start in Canada in April 2023 after its announcement on March 21, 2022. Hence, in all likelihood, we won’t return to Dery until the latter half of 2023 or, more likely, 2024.
