Mike Shannon Cause of Deἀth: Former Cardinals Broadcaster Dἰes at 83!

According to his family, Mike Shannon, a 50-year radio veteran and two-time World Series champion for the St. Louis Cardinals, pἀssed away on Saturday (29 April) at 83 due to complications from long-haul Covid-19.

Shannon spent 50 years as a part of the Cardinals’ radio broadcasts after his playing career with the team was cut short by a renal ailment. When the Cardinals hit a home run, he was well-known for shouting, “Get Up, Baby!”

Shannon, a native of St. Louis, made his National League debut in 1962 with the Cardinals. He spent nine seasons at third base and outfield contributing to the team’s World Series victories in 1964 and 1967. In 1972, Shannon made her Cardinals Radio Network debut alongside broadcasting legend Jack Buck.

They together presided over almost three decades worth of games on KMOX-AM. After Buck pἀssed away in 2002, Shannon took over as the main character’s voice until her retirement in 2021.

In addition to being recognized as Missouri’s Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 2002, 2003 and 2014, he was officially inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014. Shannon won his first Emmy for sports broadcasting in 1985.

According to Yahoo, Shannon appeared as a pre-game analyst for Fox Sports Midwest in addition to radio engagements. Additionally, he called radio broadcasts of NFL football games involving the St. Louis Cardinals and NBC’s Baseball Game of the Week.

Cardinals’ Owner & Chief Executive Officer Bill DeWitt, Jr. said:

“The St. Louis Cardinals were saddened to learn this morning of the passing of Cardinals Hall of Famer and beloved St. Louisan Mike Shannon, Mike’s unique connection to Cardinals fans and his teammates was reflected in his unbridled passion for the game, the Cardinals and the St. Louis community. On behalf of the entire Cardinals organization, we share our condolences with Mike’s family and friends and his many fans.”

Tim Shannon his son stated on the behalf of the Shannon family:

“My dad’s life was encapsulated by his devotion to his family, his friends, the Cardinals organization and the St. Louis community, My dad lived his life to the fullest and he squeezed every drop from it.”

Daughters Patricia, Peg and Erin. Sons Michael Jr. and Dan, wife Lori, 18 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren survive Shannon. Judy, his first wife, pἀssed away in 2007.
