This week, a Bergenfield councillor who is also a Democrat was sworn in to fill a seat on the Bergen County Commission and take charge of the county’s approximately 1 million citizens. Commissioner Ramon Hache, a Democrat, resigned this week to become the CEO of the Ridgewood YMCA.
His term as commissioner ends on December 31st, and Rafael Marte will fill out the remainder of it. In a vote at the March 9 conference of the Democratic Committee of Bergen County, Marte was chosen to succeed Hache. There was nobody there to oppose him.
After working as a case manager for the Westchester County Department of Social Services in White Plains, New York, Marte, 59, has now retired. To serve as a Bergen County commissioner, he said, was “the privilege of a lifetime.”

The 15th of March will be his first official meeting in his new position. Having been appointed to fill a council vacancy in Bergenfield in 2013, Marte ran for reelection but ultimately lost. In 2017, he was appointed to fill another vacancy and later that year, he was elected to his first full term.
On the 2020 ballot, he easily won another term. This June, during Caribbean Heritage Month, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco recognized Marte for his public service. There are seven members of the county board, including Tedesco, and they are all Democrats.
