On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, former Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning passed away, according to the sheriff’s office. After four terms as sheriff, he decided not to run for office again in 2018. You will find all the details of his passing in this post.
At What Age Did Blake Dorning Die?
According to the sheriff’s office, Dorning, who was 61 years old, lost his fight with cancer. The sheriff’s department stated on Facebook:
“Sheriff Blake Dorning was a man of integrity, faith, honor, courage and duty, But most of all, and at his very core, Blake was a man of compassion. He loved his family, his friends and his community.”
“He loved the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the brave men and women who kept our communities safe. Today, as our hearts are breaking, we can take solace in knowing that with Blake’s final journey now complete, his weary days of pain have passed, and his timeless days of peace have just begun.”

At age 21, Blake accepted a position as a sheriff in 1983. He was a prison officer before going on patrol. In 1994, 1989, and 2001, Dorning attained the rank of lieutenant, sergeant, and captain.
2002 saw Dorning elected sheriff. He is well-known for being a grill master throughout North Alabama. 2018 saw the selection of Kevin Turner to succeed Dorning.

It may be the insignificant to some, but to me, emceeing Sheriff Dorning’s retirement was truly a bucket list moment, one of the grandest moments I’ll forever remember.
