The Giant of Illinois and the Alton Giant, Robert Pershing Wadlow, an American who lived from February 22, 1918, to July 15, 1940, is undoubtedly the tallest individual to have ever been measured in history. His hometown of Alton, Illinois, a small community near St. Louis, Missouri, is where he was raised.

Wadlow was 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m) tall, 439 lb (199 kg), and pssed away at the age of 22. He had tremendous size and continued to develop well into adulthood due to pituitary gland hypertrophy, which causes an abnormally high dose of human growth hormone (HGH).

Wadlow, the oldest of five children, was born to Harold Franklin and Addie May (Johnson) on February 22, 1918, in Alton, Illinois. He was taller than his father by the time he was eight years old, and a unique desk was set aside for him in the first grade.

Wadlow had leg braces to walk because he had little sensation in his legs and feet. He never used a wheelchair. Wadlow gained renown after touring the country in 1936 with the Ringling Brothers Circus and performing in the main ring at Madison Square Garden and the Boston Garden.

He chose to wear his ordinary clothes when appearing, rejecting the circus’ proposal that he don a top hat and tails. In exchange for merely wearing his everyday street clothing for his 1938 commercial tour with the International Shoe Company, he was given a pair of complimentary shoes.

Wadlow worked in advertising and didn’t regard himself as a freak show. He had a great deal of physical strength up until a few days before he pssed away. Wadlow belonged to the Order of DeMolay, a fraternal organization for young men, and afterward joined the Freemasons.

By November 1939, Wadlow had attained the rank of master mason and was administered by the Grand Lodge of Illinois A.F. and A.M. A year before to his pssing, Wadlow eclipsed John Rogan as the tallest man ever. 18 days before he pssed out, on June 27, 1940, doctors measured his height, which was 8 feet, 11.1 inches (2.72 meters).

On July 4, 1940, while he was performing professionally at the Manistee National Forest Festival, a faulty brace irritated his ankle, leading to infection. After being dignosed, he underwent surgery and received a blood transfusion, but because of an inflammatory disese, his health deteriorated, and on July 15, he pssed away while dozing off.

His coffin, which twelve persons and eight assistants carried, measured 10 ft 9 in (3.28 m) long by 2 ft 8 in (0.81 m) wide by 2 ft 6 in (0.76 m) deep and weighed more than 1,000 lb (450 kg). Twelve pallbearers carried it.

He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in the Illinois town of Upper Alton, Madison County. A life-size statue of Wadlow was erected in front of the Alton Museum of History and Art in 1986.
