Ronald Ira Kirschbaum pἀssed away at 80, in Raleigh, North Carolina, on May 22, 2023. Ron, a Florida native from Sebring, first met Honey at Emory University.
Together, they relocated to Florida, New York, and Missouri before settling in Raleigh in 1971, where he quickly established himself as a vital member of both the Raleigh and Jewish communities. He was a tax attorney who worked with numerous renowned local businesses and organizations throughout his long and illustrious career.
From 1972 to 1977, he was a member of the Raleigh City Council. He was instrumental in founding and later served on the boards of directors for the Wake County SPCA, the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, and Hospice of Wake County.
He also served on the boards of the neighborhood Jewish Federation, Beth Meyer Synagogue, and the North Carolina Anti-Defamation League. After his first wife pἀssed away, he remarried. He shared a happy life with his second wife, Jan, enjoying time with friends, frequent travel, and long hikes in the woods with their dog Dharma.
He participated extensively in various social justice problems, marching and organizing for causes ranging from women’s rights to antisemitism and racism. As a representative of the Anti-Defamation League, he kept an eye on several hate groups and their regional activity.
He had supported the NC Symphony for a very long period. His family’s fondest memories of him were giving out flyers, going to protests, and participating in fundraisers for the causes he believed in. He instilled a love of nature and animals in his family, taking them on numerous vacations, including hiking, camping, and whitewater rafting.

Frank (Suzanne) Kirschbaum, Cynthia (Sean) Toomey, and Steven (Rebekah) Kirschbaum, all of Raleigh, and his wife Jan Kirschbaum survive him. Cullen Toomey, Isaiah, Angelina, Emma, Noah, Max, Asher Kirschbaum, and his grandkids also survive him. Eleora Toomey, his granddaughter, and his wife, Honey Kirschbaum, predeceased him.
