It took a long time to get around to developing a movie version of the wildly popular Five Nights at Freddy’s series of video games. To be sure, at Blumhouse Productions, action is being taken at long last. Studio chief Jason Blum had already teased several pre-production photographs on Twitter, and subsequent announcements have continued in the same vein.
Upon the release of Scott Cawthon’s debut game in the series in 2014, fans discovered an unexpected multimedia phenomenon. Film rights were purchased in 2015, and there have been numerous books, graphic novels, and games set in this universe since then. Now that the Five Nights at Freddy’s film has been in the works for a long time and is getting near to completion, let’s take a look at all we know about it.
When Is Five Nights At Freddy’s Coming Out?
Production on the feature film has not yet begun, but it is still planned to launch in February 2023. Blum predicted a 2023 release date for the film back in March of 2022, but there have been no more developments since then. Production hasn’t even started yet, so the earliest fans can expect any Fazbear scares to arrive is early in 2024.
What Is Five Nights at Freddy’s About?
2014 marked the debut of the first Five Nights at Freddy’s video game. The popularity of this resource-management game featuring intense jump scares skyrocketed after being picked up by several prominent YouTubers, most notably Markiplier. You take on the role of Mike Schmidt, a new night shift security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.
On your first night, “Phone Guy” calls to remind you to keep a watch on the cameras and the animatronics, which have a disturbing propensity of wandering around at night. Freddy Fazbear, Chica the hungry chicken, Bonnie the rabbit, and Foxy the pirate fox are some of the key enemies from the first games.
The player’s mission is to keep the animatronic threats outside of the security office by strategically closing doors while managing the battery power that powers the cameras, doors, and lights. The night has to be redone if the power goes out before 6 a.m. since the animatronics will attack.

Mike Schmidt is probably free to look for a better job when he receives his paycheck after surviving for 5 nights. There is an almost bottomless pit of knowledge surrounding the world of Freddy Fazbear, so this is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of the games.
Who Is Directing Five Nights At Freddy’s?
Chris Columbus had been attached to direct the film adaptation of the franchise for quite some time, but in October 2022, Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions revealed that Emma Tammi would be taking over the helm, with a screenplay written by Tammi, Seth Cuddeback, and Cawthon.
Tammi has directed segments for the Hulu supernatural horror series The Wind and the Blumhouse programme Into the Dark. Tammi may not have Chris Columbus’s long résumé, but she has worked with Blumhouse Productions before, and given the film’s prominence and the success of the franchise, she is undoubtedly up to the challenge.
It was also announced late last year that Jim Henson’s Creature Shop would be responsible for the film’s creature design. In August, Blum posted an image on his Twitter of what appeared to be a sculptor at work on a rough scale model of Freddy Fazbear.
When working with the famed practical effects creature company, anticipation for the film naturally rises, at the very least, the animatronics will be impressive. Below is the initial tweet for your perusal.
Who Plays the Lead Role in “Five Nights at Freddy’s”?
Production on Five Nights at Freddy’s is set to begin in 2023, according to Blum, and the cast has just been announced. Actor Matthew Lillard (Scream, Scooby Doo, Hackers) was confirmed in December to play William Afton, aka Purple Guy. The role of Night Security Guard Mike Schmidt will be played by Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games, Detention, Tragedy Girls), with Piper Rubio playing Mike’s younger sister Abby.
Mary Stuart Masterson (Benny and Joon, Fried Green Tomatoes, Daniel Isn’t Real), who is also listed on the cast list, is playing an unspecified female antagonist. It’s unclear who the villain is, although she could be providing the voice for Circus Baby or playing Vanny, a character that appeared in the later expanded universe books and the most recent game, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach.
