Marshall County is Defeated by Blue Tornado, While Lady Tornado Loses to Murray

The Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado and the Marshall County Marshals squared off in a First Region duel on Saturday night at Otis Dinning Gymnasium. Paducah Tilghman has won every game against the Marshals since 2021, and their 70-65 triumph on Saturday was no exception.

After suffering a 61-50 defeat at the hands of their in-town rivals McCracken County on Friday night, the Blue Tornado hosted the Marshals the following day. Caleb Payne scored for the Blue Tornado despite early pressure from the Orange and Blue defense after Hunter Wallace gave Marshall County a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of play.

With 4:34 remaining in the first quarter and Marshall County leading 12-7, Tilghman head coach Greg Overstreet called a timeout to relieve some of the pressure. When the Blue Tornado went on a 5-0 run, they were able to cut Marshall County’s 14-7 lead to just one point. The Marshals maintained their 18-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

At the end of the first quarter, Mian Shaw and Tommy Robertson both had seven points to lead their respective teams. After that, Robertson started the second quarter with a bang, scoring the first five points. After Robertson’s three-pointer, Wallace scored to give Marshall County a 25-16 lead over Paducah Tilghman.

Although Marshall County had a six-point lead, the Blue Tornado scored five and brought the score to four. James Harris made two consecutive 3-pointers, bringing the score to 27-all. The Blue Tornado got the boost they needed from Harris’s three-point shooting and raced past Marshall County, outscoring them by 10 points in the second quarter en route to taking a 36-30 lead into the locker room at the half.

LeBron McMullen’s three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Blue Tornado a 40-36 lead. Marshall County was able to cut into Tilghman’s advantage right after halftime thanks to Jayvion Powell’s technical foul, which put Marshall County’s Wallace on the line. Wallace scored on both, increasing the lead to 36-32.

With PTHS leading 36-35, Marshall County’s Trey Wall hit a 3-pointer to get his team within one point. Powell was dominant for Tilghman, scoring nine points despite the Marshals’ foul trouble. Powell, Harris, Payne, and Omari Williams all had to go to the free-throw line because Wade Moore and Wall committed three fouls apiece. Tilghman shot 4/7 from the foul line in the third quarter.

Even though the Marshals got as close as three points on four separate possessions in the fourth quarter, the Blue Tornado took advantage of the orange and blue team’s constant foul problems to pull away in the end. Tilghman’s 11-for-14 performance from the charity stripe sealed the victory for the Blue Tornado, as the Marshals never managed to close the gap.
