San Francisco Saw the Stabbing Dea†h of Cash App Founder Bob Lee

The payment system Cash App developer, Bob Lee, was stabbed to dea†h early Tuesday (4 April) in San Francisco. Lee’s father posted on Facebook to confirm his passing, stating that he and his son had just moved from the Bay Area to Miami.

Rick Lee wrote (According to The Guardian)

“I just lost my best friend, my son Bob Lee when he lost his life on the street in San Francisco early Tuesday Morning.” 

The CEO of MobileCoin, a cryptocurrency business where Lee served as Chief Product Officer, also confirmed Lee’s passing in a statement to NBC Bay Area. Josh Goldbar said in a statement to the outlet (as reported by News Hub)

“Bob was a dynamo, a force of nature. Bob was the genuine article. He was made for the world that is being born right now, he was a child of dreams, and whatever he imagined, no matter how crazy, he made real.”

Goldbar said in his statement –

“Bob was the quintessential creator, leader, and consummate hacker. From large contributions to Android at Google, to being the first CTO of Square, in that time creating Cash App, and working with us here at MobileCoin, Bob surely had an impact that will last far beyond his short time on Earth. Here’s to the crazy ones. We will miss you Bob. We love you.”

A 43-year-old man was discovered with what appeared to be stab wounds, according to San Francisco police, who said that at around 2.35 am on Tuesday (4 April), officers went to a report of a stabbing on Main Street.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds after officers provided first assistance, according to the department in a press release. The San Francisco district attorney, Brooke Jenkins, offered her condolences to Lee’s family on Twitter:

“I want to extend my sincerest condolences to Mr Lee’s family members & loved ones for his loss. We do not tolerate these horrific acts of violence in San Francisco.”

Police have not yet made any arrests or provided details on the circumstances of the attack. Officer Nicole Pachetti, a public information officer, said in an email to the Associated Press (as reported by Fortune)

“This is an open and active investigation. For that reason we are not releasing further information. We will provide further details when they become available.”

The San Francisco supervisor Matt Dorsey pledged to assist in investigating the k!lling, which he called (According to Economic Times)

“a senseless tragedy that I know is made worse by the fact that no suspect is yet in custody.”

Rick Lee described his son as a smart and generous person who (as reported by Business Insider)

“would give you the shirt off his back. He would never look down on anyone and adhered to a strict no-judgment philosophy. Bobby worked harder than anyone and was the smartest person I have ever known.”

In the ICT sector, Lee had several positions. Lee co-founded Cash App at Square, where he served as its first chief technology officer, and worked at Google before joining MobileCoin. Also, he advised startups and invested in businesses like Clubhouse and SpaceX, run by Elon Musk.

Several tech executives expressed shock and condolences to Lee. Square co-founder Jack Dorsey called the murd*r “horrific” and noted on the social media site Nostr that Lee was “important to Square and Cash App,” while Elon Musk condemned “v!olent cr*me” in San Francisco on Twitter.

Wesley Chan, co-founder of FPV Ventures and a venture financier, joined others in expressing their grief over Lee’s passing. Chan claimed that he had met Lee more than ten years ago. At the same time, both of them were employees of Google, back when software developers like Lee contributed to developing the Android mobile operating system before its 2008 release.

Chan told the Associated Press –

“He was an incredibly iconic founder in the tech world. He wrote large parts of Android when he was at Google. He became the CTO of Square and helped build Cash App. His resume reads something like a Fortune cover article.”
